The journey of strengthening the army | Fulfilling the promise in the "battlefield" that protects life

"Life depends on each other and never give up."
This eight-character proverb written in the corridor of the Department of Critical Care Medicine of the First Medical Center of PLA General Hospital is a true portrayal of his medical career.
In the 22 years since he joined the army, he has "robbed" more than 10,000 critically ill patients from the hands of death, and the mortality rate is as low as 3%-5%, ranking first-class at home and abroad.
Go to Wenchuan earthquake relief line, go to West Africa to fight Ebola hemorrhagic fever epidemic, and go to Pakistan to fight COVID-19 epidemic … … Over the years, he has courageously advanced "the most beautiful retrogression" again and again, participated in major medical rescue missions at home and abroad, and fulfilled a soldier’s commitment to the motherland and the people.
He has always kept in mind the creed that "what critically ill patients need most is timely and scientific treatment", and as the direction of department construction, he has made unremitting efforts to tackle key problems and scientific research, which has improved the international reputation of China’s critical care medicine.
He is Zhou Feihu, director of the Department of Critical Care Medicine of the First Medical Center of PLA General Hospital. On July 31, the Propaganda Department of the Central Committee and the Political Work Department of the Central Military Commission jointly released 12 "the most beautiful revolutionary soldiers in the new era", and Zhou Feihu was gloriously elected.
"As a doctor, it is a very happy thing to watch patients day and night."
On May 12th every year, Zhou Feihu receives greetings from Sichuan girl Tang Yulan. During the rescue after the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, Zhou Feihu saved her life and her leg.
"You finally woke up, and Director Zhou kept you awake for days and nights." The 24-year-old Tang Yulan learned from the nurse that when she was rescued from the 7-story ruins and sent to the General Hospital of Chengdu Military Region (now the General Hospital of Western Theater), many organs in her body were almost exhausted. It was Zhou Feihu who saved her life day and night.
Tang Yulan survived, but faced with new hardships — — Both legs may need to be amputated.
"I’m just 24 years old. If I amputate, it’s really unbearable for life. I even had the idea of suicide. " Tang Wei said.
Zhou Feihu gave her the courage to live. After learning about Tang Yulan’s appeal, under the leadership of Lu Shibi and other old experts, Zhou Feihu and his comrades-in-arms thought it over and over again, and decided to try their best to save the patient’s leg. "How can such a young girl live without legs?" Zhou Feihu said: "Even if there is a glimmer of hope, we must do our best."
Zhou Feihu enlightened her: "You should have confidence in yourself, and I will buy you durian when you are well."
Durian is Tang Yulan’s favorite fruit. During the treatment, she and Zhou Feihu often talked about the good times when she studied in Thailand, and Zhou Feihu would also tell her thrilling stories about many rescues.
It’s more than Tang Yulan. In the two months after the earthquake, Zhou Feihu accompanied many other patients day and night. Some had a high fever in the middle of the night, and Zhou Feihu appeared in front of the hospital bed for emergency treatment; There was poor communication between patients and their families, and Zhou Feihu took pains to run at both ends … … So that later, many patients did not see Zhou Feihu, and they were anxious.
"You are the purest doctor I have ever seen!" A patient who was treated once commented on Zhou Feihu face to face.
"As a doctor, it is a very happy thing to watch the patients day and night. It is incomparable to see the patients who have worked hard to recover." Zhou Feihu watched the patient leave the hospital and smiled happily.

"China military doctors shoulder a heavy mission."
In 2015, China urgently sent a medical team to help Liberia fight the epidemic of Ebola hemorrhagic fever, and Zhou Feihu was among them. At that time, more than 100 medical staff in Liberia had been infected and died.
"Have you ever been afraid?" A reporter once asked Zhou Feihu.
"Said not afraid is false. But once you start to treat patients, you can’t care about those, and you only think about how to save people. " Zhou Feihu said.
The first patient admitted by Zhou Feihu who was diagnosed with Ebola virus was Muruba, a local female primary school teacher. The virus has claimed the lives of three of her family members. Muruba was very scared and thought that his time was running out with the virus, diabetes and high blood pressure.
Even though the patient was desperate, the China military doctor never gave up.
During that time, Zhou Feihu and his colleagues endured the high temperature, put on airtight three-layer isolation suits every day and went in and out of the ward. While controlling Muruba’s basic disease, they improved the function of damaged organs from the perspective of critical medicine, and finally rescued her from the dying line.
At the moment of discharge, Muruba expressed her simple wish: to touch the face of Zhou Feihu with her own hands. In her opinion, this is the most beautiful face of a China military doctor.
"At that time, what do you think you are just a doctor? Every action of each of us represents China. Because you know that you are a China military doctor. " Zhou Feihu said.
In more than two months, Zhou Feihu participated in the treatment of 61 patients, treated 38 suspected Ebola patients and 5 confirmed Ebola patients, and the success rate of severe patients was over 80%.
Whenever there is an urgent and dangerous task, Zhou Feihu always takes the initiative and never shirks it. In May 2016, China’s peacekeeping troops in Mali were attacked, and soldier Shen Liangliang was unfortunately killed and many people were injured.
"If I go, I don’t even have to fight the vaccine. I fought several kinds of Ebola last year, and they are still within the validity period!" Zhou Feihu volunteered again.
The superior ordered him to be the medical team leader and bring the wounded soldier home safely.
Flying to Mali, Zhou Feihu found that the task was more arduous than expected, and some seriously injured people could not be transferred immediately. Due to the limited medical conditions in Mali, the seriously injured were quickly sent to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Senegal. As the only expert in critical care medicine in the medical group, Zhou Feihu chose to stay and take care of these wounded people, and then returned to China for further treatment after the vital signs were stable.
Faced with difficulties such as equipment shortage and poor medical conditions, Zhou Feihu, with his rich clinical experience, helped several wounded people to get through the critical period in more than 20 days and transferred from intensive care to general wards.
On the plane back home, Zhou Feihu was worried about the sudden thrombosis and breathing problems of the wounded, and he only listened to the stethoscope again and again to help the wounded move … … Finally, the wounded returned to the embrace of the motherland safely.
Zhou Feihu said: "It is our duty to save lives after being a doctor for so many years. More often, a China military doctor shoulders a heavy mission. "

"Only with courage and love can we go forward."
Zhou Feihu, who has witnessed many where will you go, knows that what critically ill patients need most is timely and scientific treatment.
"ICU is a place where mistakes are not allowed." In order to improve the medical level of the department, in recent years, Zhou Feihu will also lead the team to build a "smart ICU", using early warning of big data to carry out standardized treatment and improve the efficiency of treatment.
Zhou Feihu conducted a series of scientific research on the frequently fatal labor-induced heatstroke in soldiers’ daily training, which greatly improved the success rate of critical illness treatment. As a member of the army’s heatstroke treatment team and a distance education teacher of the whole army, he participated in the training of medical staff in grass-roots units for many times and achieved good results. He won one second prize for military medical achievements and six national patents.
As the project leader, Zhou Feihu has also undertaken six projects, including the projects of the National Natural Science Foundation, and published more than 60 papers by the first/correspondent, including more than 20 papers in SCI journals, of which 4 papers were published in the international authoritative journals of CriticalCareMedicine and Critical Care, and made many speeches at the International Congress of Critical Care Medicine, which greatly improved the international reputation of this discipline in China.
Zhou Feihu has done the best in all his work, but he also has his own regrets.
Loyalty and filial piety have never been satisfactory since ancient times. Zhou Feihu was studying abroad when his father died. It became his greatest regret that he failed to do his last filial piety for the old man. After returning to China, he took his mother to live with him in Beijing, but because of his busy work, he rarely had time to accompany her at home.
It is said that mother and son are connected. Zhou Feihu’s mother is in poor health, but she will not trouble her "doctor son". She always goes to the hospital alone to buy medicine. "I dare not be sick, and I dare not say that I am sick." A mother is so considerate of her son.
"Every time I go out, my mother stares at TV because she knows I won’t talk too much about work. For example, if I go to Africa, she will not let go of any TV content about Ebola in Africa. When I go to Pakistan, as long as anything involving Pakistan is involved, she will not let go, and she will stare at TV. " Zhou Feihu did not know that these are the silent love of his mother.
"Only with courage and love can we go forward." In the annual summary of the department in 2021, Zhou Feihu ended with such a sentence. He understands that his personal regret is to make more people no longer regret.
In Zhou Feihu’s office, there are various honorary certificates in simple bookcases — — He was awarded the second class merit once and the third class merit twice, and was awarded the national advanced individual, the most beautiful foreign aid doctor, the national moral model and a good doctor in China in the fight against COVID-19 epidemic. What many people don’t realize is that outside the simple bookcase, years of fatigue and running around, the extra white hair accumulated at Zhou Feihu’s temples … …
